Famous for its cultural and educational heritage, Oxford has a history going back to the 7th Century. Today it's a wonderful mix of ancient tradition and modern cosmopolitan splendour. Oxford University, the oldest in the UK, is nearly 800 years old, but Oxford is not only an academic city. It is rich in culture with museums, theatres and cinemas and buzzing with cafés, restaurants, bars and clubs. There are shops of every type, from large department stores to small specialised shops, including the famous Covered Market. Most areas of the city can be reached on foot, but Oxford is excellent for cyclists, too. There is also an efficient bus service.
