Practical Information for the "University Studies" Program

ACCOMMODATION

We offer two types of accommodation for your university stay: host families and student residences. In the following pages, for each of the presented destinations, you will find detailed information about the accommodations in the school description.

HOST FAMILY

Our host families are selected by the housing coordinators of our partner schools and universities. Our local correspondents on-site are available to students to answer their questions and strive to provide a host family that meets the student's preferences (specific dietary requirements, pets, smoker/non-smoker, etc.), subject to availability and depending on the remaining time before the start of the stay. Choosing accommodation with a host family will give you many opportunities to practice your spoken English with locals during everyday exchanges, while also discovering their culture, way of life, and culinary habits. At first, some differences in lifestyle may surprise you, and you may need to make an effort to adapt. It is important to keep in mind that there is no "perfect" family, as compatibility between individuals is subjective. Having an open attitude and demonstrating your willingness to explore the country's way of life will be the best allies for your quick adaptation! With that said, staying with a host family remains one of the best memories for many of our students.

STUDENT RESIDENCE

If you prefer to live surrounded by other students while maintaining your independence as much as possible, a residence accommodation option will be suitable for you. You will have a double or single room, with a private or shared bathroom, and you will have access to various facilities provided by the residence, such as a kitchen, common room, etc. These are great places to socialize and make connections with your roommates!

Note: Places in student residences are limited and subject to availability, so it is recommended to register early in the year!

AILS SUGGESTION: HOST FAMILY/STUDENT RESIDENCE COMBO TO EXPERIENCE ALL ASPECTS OF STUDENT LIFE!

Feel free to contact us for more information.

OPT IN THE USA

In the USA, if you complete a degree program of more than 9 months, you may be eligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT). This program allows you to work for up to 12 months after obtaining your degree, but please note that it must be within your field of study. The procedures for OPT are to be done on-site, in coordination with the university.

UNIVERSITY STUDIES

SCHOOL CALENDAR

The Anglo-Saxon university calendar is divided, depending on the institutions, into years, semesters, or trimesters. Each semester starts with an academic term during which new students can begin their studies at the same time as local students without falling behind in the course program. The duration of a semester varies from 4 to 5 months. Vacations are scheduled for Christmas, spring, and summer.

KNOWLEDGE ASSESSMENT / EXAMS

The success of exams is based on both continuous assessments throughout the year and final exam grades. These grades are added up and weighted to determine your final grade and the issuance of the diploma.

OBTAINING A DEGREE

The Anglo-Saxon education system is based on a credit accumulation system. To obtain these credits, students must pass their classes. For example, the Associate Degree, an American/Canadian diploma usually obtained after two years of study, requires the acquisition of 60 credits. This means that students will be awarded the degree once they have earned this number of credits. NOTE: In the Anglo-Saxon system, your behavior, class participation, and commitment to university also count towards your final grade. Therefore, do not neglect any aspect of your student life.

STUDENT LIFE

Make the most of your student life by participating in associations and clubs at your university! They are diverse and will allow you to make new connections quickly!

AMERICAN/CANADIAN UNIVERSITY SYSTEMS: THE MOST "FLEXIBLE"

Each semester, students choose the subjects they want to study, typically amounting to 12 credit units for the USA and 9 for Canada. Each subject is assigned a different number of credits, and it is up to you to create your schedule and determine the number of classes you take (on average, 3 to 5 classes per semester). Numerous options are available to students (depending on the destination), and you can combine them according to your preferences. For example, it is possible to choose a business class, a music class, and a photography class in the same semester!

AUSTRALIAN/BRITISH UNIVERSITY SYSTEMS: CLOSEST TO EUROPEAN SYSTEMS

Each semester, you will follow the entire course program corresponding to your targeted degree. The program is established by the university for each field of study. Some subjects are mandatory, and you also choose several options from those offered by the university.

TOEFL, IELTS EXAMS

During your stay, you may be required to take one or more English language exams, including: TOEFL The "Test Of English as a Foreign Language" (TOEFL) assesses your general English language proficiency and is required for admission to universities in the USA. It is also recognized by top French and Swiss schools. This exam covers levels A1, B1, B2, and C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and can be taken multiple times. IELTS The "International English Language Testing System" is required for students who wish to enter a British, Australian, or Canadian university. It measures general English language skills and is recognized by many institutions worldwide. It covers CEFR levels A1 to C2.
