Mapping

Cape Town, or The Cape, is a city in South Africa located on the eponymous plain, along the shores of Table Bay and False Bay. It is dominated by Table Mountain and the western part of the Cape Fold Belt. One can find a unique flora in the area, such as the fynbos, a shrub that grows nowhere else. The climate in Cape Town is Mediterranean, with hot and dry summers, mild and humid winters, and abundant sunshine. Rainfall is generally scarce, but can be intense when it occurs...

History & Culture

Archaeological research shows that the Cape region has been inhabited by humans for approximately 750,000 years. It was discovered by Europeans in 1488, who made several attempts to establish supply ports for ships sailing to Asia. Their relations with the indigenous people, especially the Khoi Khoi, were difficult and often ended tragically. In 1691, Cape Town officially became a port colony, and its strategic location made it a cosmopolitan hub, attracting sailors from around the world. Slavery was abolished in 1863, but segregationist laws were implemented during apartheid by the nationalist government elected in 1948. These laws were gradually repealed between 1976 and 1989, when the democratic party came to power.
