Mapping

Chicago is built on the shores of Lake Michigan, in the center of the American Midwest. Located in the state of Illinois, Chicago is 830 km west of Toronto, 1,300 km west of New York, and 3,300 km northeast of Los Angeles. The city has several watercourses: Chicago, Calumet, and Des Plaines. The humid continental climate is highly variable and generates a high temperature range, with temperatures that can vary by up to thirty degrees. Chicago experiences long periods of freezing temperatures during winter, caused by cold winds from Canada. The upward movement of warm air in summer leads to heatwaves that stretch into autumn, known as the famous Indian summer.

History & Culture

Originally a marshy area on Native American territories, the site of Chicago saw the establishment of the French during the 17th century. In 1763, following the Seven Years' War, the English took control of the region. Chicago became part of Illinois after the War of Independence. The city was marked by the Great Fire of 1871, an unprecedented population growth, and the infamous gangs operating during Prohibition. Ethnic neighborhoods were already present, such as Chinatown, the African-American neighborhood of Bronzeville, and the Czech sector of Pilsen. These population movements have contributed to the cultural richness of the city, including its gospel, jazz, and independent rock scenes.

Things to Do / Places to See
